"Major, to what extent did you act upon your feelings for Miss LaRoux?"
"Medium."
"Excuse me?"
"How am I supposed to answer that question?"I started reading These Broken Stars the moment that I finished my previous book, and at the beginning I wasn't sure it was a good decision.
The writing style between the two books was very different, and it took me a few chapters to adjust to the difference. I am SO very glad I pushed on, though.
Unlike a lot of young adult novels these days, the story of Lilac and Tarver was not one of instalove. We knew from the start that Tarver wasn't the dumb soldier the reporters suggested he was, and that Lilac wasn't quite the spoiled princess that everyone expected her to be, but neither of them was perfect. They both had some growing to do.
I didn't want to leave their world when I hit the last page, and I'm sure the "where are they now?" question will play on my mind a fair bit down the track, but I am optimistic about how their lives continued off the page.
I can't wait to read the next book in this trilogy! Though I know it is not Tarver and Lilac's story, I can only hope they might get a mention somewhere, but even if we don't hear any more about them it will be further insight into this universe so well built by Kaufman and Spooner.
